SUBJECTS: National Day of Mourning
JOURNALIST:
Just wondering how do you feel, how do you, what did you think of the service
today?
TREASURER:
Look, this is a day I think that all Australians will come together to pay
their respects. This has affected our nation in a way which is beyond the experience
of any of us and we grieve for those that are lost, for their families and I
think the whole of our nation today just wants to stop and reflect on the loss
of lives, the tragedy that was involved and to show our support for the victims
and their families.
JOURNALIST:
Do you think that was shown having a packed service there today?
TREASURER:
Yes, I think the way in which this has affected the feelings of all Australians
and the fact that they have come out today to express their deep support for
those that have been lost, I think has been a great thing, and Australians wanted
the victims and their families to know that the whole nation stands behind them
at a time like this.
JOURNALIST:
And on the Cunningham by-election, you’re not interested in commenting at all?
TREASURER:
No, I don’t think it is a day to be commenting on domestic political events.
Today is the day to stop and just think about the loss that we have experienced
and to support those who are still mourning.
