NUMBER OF BIRTHS SOARS

Preliminary figures released today by the ABS show that total births in Australia in 2005 is now estimated at 265,031.

This new estimate is the highest number of births since 1971. It is the second highest number of births since 1960.

It is too early to tell whether the trend of increased births will continue. I hope it does.

Some years ago I drew attention to the looming problem of our ageing population.

In May 2004 I encouraged parents to have “one for mum, one for dad, and one for the country.”

The Government has introduced specific measures to support parents with children. Specifically:-

• The introduction of the Baby Bonus from July 2004;
• Substantial increases in the rates of family benefits;
• The provision of extra childcare places; and
• The introduction of the Childcare Rebate.

The higher birth rate reflects a confidence in Australia’s future, and a greater sense of economic security for families.
