TAX CONSULTATIVE COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATIONS

The Treasurer today received the Recommendations of the Tax Consultative Committee.

Mr David Vos, Partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers chaired the Tax Consultative

Committee which was asked to provide recommendations to the Government on the

precise scope of the GST-free areas of health, education, religious services

and the non-commercial activities of charities. The Committee was also asked

to examine transitional arrangements relating to motor vehicles.

Mr Vos was joined by Professor Tannock, Vice-Chancellor at the University of

Notre Dame and Chairman of the National Catholic Education Commission, and

Professor Judith Whitworth, Commonwealth Chief Medical Officer and Professor

of Medicine, University of New South Wales at St George Hospital.

The Committee has provided the Government with a workable and comprehensive

framework for applying the GST to the areas under scrutiny.

The Government will be reviewing each of the Committee’s Recommendations

and will consider these in the process of finalising the drafting of the legislation.

The Treasurer thanked Mr Vos and his fellow Committee members for their valuable

efforts in helping the Government in this important task.
