Australian Competition Tribunal Appointments

NO.109

AUSTRALIAN COMPETITION TRIBUNAL APPOINTMENTS

I am pleased to announce the appointment of two additional Deputy Presidents

to the Australian Competition Tribunal.

The Hon Justice Peter Heerey, of Melbourne, has been appointed until 15 February

2009. Justice Heerey has been a Judge of the Federal Court of Australia since

December 1990 and is also President of the Defence Force Discipline Appeals

Tribunal.

The Hon Justice Roger Gyles AO, of Sydney, has been appointed until 21 August

2008. Justice Gyles has been a Judge of the Federal Court of Australia since

June 1999 and is also an Additional Judge of the Supreme Court of the Australian

Capital Territory.

The Tribunal’s core function is to review a range of decisions under

the Trade Practices Act 1974.

The Tribunal consists of presidential members – who must be federal

Judges – and other members who must be qualified by virtue of their ‘knowledge

of, or experience in, industry, commerce, economics, law or public administration’.

Members serve on a part-time basis, as required, for a term of up to 7 years.

Following these appointments, the Tribunal will now comprise five presidential

members and seven other members.
